FISSÃO E IMPLOSÃO: from the modern man to the post-internet
Graphic Design Thesis

2016

A hypertextual printed publication on modern and contemporary media transformation.

Information in the 21st century is structured more by the mosaic’s shape than a linear one. By consuming informational mosaics, the thought process becomes kaleidoscopic, as we assimilate information from multiple points of view. This multiplicity of orientations can also be reflected in the concept of hypertext. Present mainly on digital surfaces, hypertext is founded by its multimedia and connected feature. Following these ideas of semantic interconnectivity, the theoretical basis of the project was structured so that there was an analysis of the media that began with the written culture and with the typographic press, and extended to the digital media in order to connect topics of interest, forming a kind of hypertextual book.

Fissão is the first publication and refers to the breakdown of acoustic space giving rise to a mostly visual and organized environment. The man now conscious of his place in time and space is seen as belonging to a process of scientific progression and development. Compared to the other books of the project, here the textual and imagistic structures are predetermined and linear. The content is clear and objective. You can read Fissão in full here (in portuguese).

Híbrido is the second publication of the set, and speaks of the hybrid energy released by the media combination caused by the stupor of the modern individual when encountering the first signs of digital media. The page undergoes a demolition from its nucleus, disorganizing the information into active and simultaneous fragments of meaning. It also gains depth, free to assume its physical volume within the digital era. The text behaves like a chaotic texture: it converges and spills over the visual environment of the page. Information is now a substance that is simultaneous and multi-dimensional. The implosion of type causes momentary confusion — until one realizes that this is its natural state. There have been 15 editions of Hybrid for sale, please contact me if you want to purchase. You can read Híbrido in full here (in portuguese).

Implosão is the last part of the project, and the goal is to bring the cyberspace experience into the tangible world. Structurally, this last publication behaves as a hypermediated object that has no beginning, middle or end, seeking to bring onto the pages heterogeneous information that is not restricted to size or order, like different windows of an internet browser. Using a neodymium magnet, a magnetic spine was built as a binding alternative. By making the pages impermanent, a strong semantic connection to the cyberspace is created based on the manipulation of the reader-user, who has free will to trace, reformat and reconfigure his way through the book, repositioning and rearranging the pages as he wishes. As a documentation of cyberspace, the goal is not to concentrate the reading but to disperse it. You can read Implosão in full here (mostly in portuguese).
